Award-winning omega-3 study receives prestigious recognition from The Nutrition Society

The award-winning study, “High-dose fish oil supplements are more effective than oily fish in altering the number and function of extracellular vesicles in healthy human subjects: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel trial,” was conducted by researchers from Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Reading, and the University of Southampton. 

Professor Yaqoob, Professor of Nutritional Physiology and Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) at the University of Reading, presented the Paper of the Year Prize Lecture at The Nutrition Society Congress 2026 in Newcastle, England. Following the event, Professor Yaqoob shared that the lecture was very well received and thanked collaborators for their contributions to the award-winning research.

Award-Winning Research in Omega-3 Science 

Published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2025, the 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel trial examined the effects of omega-3 intake from high-dose fish oil supplementation compared with oily fish consumption on extracellular vesicles (EVs) in healthy adults. 

Extracellular vesicles are microscopic particles released by cells into circulation and are increasingly studied for their potential role in cardiovascular physiology, including blood coagulation. 

Participants receiving high-dose fish oil supplements showed a significant reduction in the number of circulating EVs and a decrease in EV-stimulated thrombin generation. Participants consuming oily fish at dietarily achievable levels did not demonstrate the same changes, despite both groups showing comparable increases in EPA and DHA in red blood cells. 

The researchers identified EPA intake as a potential factor contributing to the differences observed between the groups. The supplement group received approximately 1.5 grams of EPA per day, compared with approximately 0.6 grams from the oily fish intervention. 

As a parallel trial involving 42 participants, the findings are exploratory. The researchers noted that additional larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm and further investigate the observations.
