EPA and DHA Omega-3 Important for Immune Health

Coshocton, Ohio – March 26, 2020 – As advanced as science is today, the human immune system is still poorly understood. Most Americans know that vitamin C supports immune health, and most consume the daily recommended intake of vitamin C. This is not the case when it comes to omega-3’s. The vast majority of Americans are not consuming even minimum intake recommendations for EPA and DHA omega-3’s, leaving a large percentage of the population lacking essential nutrition required for healthy immune function. EPA and DHA are essential nutrients in human health because they supply the raw material, the source materials from which our body can produce molecules necessary for our immune system to operate properly. For example, from EPA and DHA we produce compounds (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes, resolvins) needed to support healthy respiratory function, body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and resolve inflammation. EPA and DHA also stimulate and balance immune system modulators such as B-cells, cytokines, and lymphocytes. The global minimum intake recommendation for EPA and DHA is 250 mg per day. However, studies show Americans consume less than 100 mg of EPA and DHA per day. The human body is incapable of making these precious, essential ingredients. EPA and DHA naturally occur only in seafood and fish oil, so the only way to get their health benefits is to consume seafood as part of a regular diet or through fish oil supplements.

“What we know from the scientific literature is EPA and DHA omega-3s found in fish oil are integral nutrients for a healthy immune system”, said Gretchen Vannice, Director of Nutrition Education and Research at AlaskOmega. Vannice added, “We’ve been focused on the extensive, documented benefits associated with optimal omega-3 status, including heart health, mental health, maternal health, and joint flexibility, especially as we age. But, attention on essential daily needs has really been lost. To be sure, at its core, the greatest need for EPA and DHA is to support normal, healthy metabolism, immune function, the nervous system, and other vital functions”.

EPA, or eicosapentaenoic acid, is a 20-carbon fatty acid with 5 double bonds; this complex molecule is a mechanical genius when it comes to managing and regulating basic human metabolism. That’s why humans have a fundamental need for EPA and why consuming more has additional health benefits. The same is true for DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, with its 22-carbons and 6 double bonds.  For example, during pregnancy, EPA and DHA omega-3 are crucial for the early development and programming of the human immune system. In early childhood, EPA and DHA are required for normal growth and development of cells throughout the body, including nerve and immune cells.

Professor Phillip Calder, Head of Human Development & Health and Professor of Nutritional Immunology within Medicine at the University of Southampton added, “Getting nutrition right is vital for the immune system to function properly. Many nutrients are involved, including omega-3. EPA and DHA (Omega-3 from fish and from supplements) are important in controlling the activity of the immune system, especially inflammation. It is unfortunate that many people do not get enough EPA and DHA in their diet.”

AlaskOmega Participates in a Landmark Publication on Omega-7

Coshocton, OH – October 8, 2019. Organic Technologies, producer of AlaskOmega® omega-3 and omega-7 concentrates, announced today that the company has received a “no questions” letter from the FDA supporting the self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status of AlaskOmega® 50% and 70% omega-7 concentrates. The letter indicates that the FDA has successfully completed its own independent evaluation of AlaskOmega® omega-7 concentrates and has no questions regarding Organic Technologies’ conclusion that these ingredients are GRAS under their intended conditions of use.

AlaskOmega® 50% and 70% omega-7 concentrates achieved self-affirmed GRAS status through an independent scientific panel of experts that evaluated AlaskOmega® omega-7 concentrates in accordance with stringent US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety criteria. Following a comprehensive review of the safety, toxicology and proposed usage, the independent panel of experts reached a unanimous decision that AlaskOmega® omega-7 concentrates are safe for use in foods and beverages.

Omega-7, or palmitoleic acid (C16:n1), is a monosaturated fat that has been studied for its potential benefits across a wide range of health applications, including heart health, anti-inflammation, insulin sensitivity, satiety, and anti-aging benefits for skin, hair and nails. With the self-affirmed GRAS status, AlaskOmega® 50% and 70% omega-7 concentrates can be safely used in food and beverage products without regulatory barriers, expanding application options beyond dietary supplements.

Organic Technologies is currently conducting a clinical trial using AlaskOmega® 50% omega-7 concentrate to assess the ingredient’s health benefit towards inflammation, glucose management, satiety, and cholesterol markers. The company will be promoting its entire line of AlaskOmega® ingredients at SupplySide West in Las Vegas in October.

AlaskOmega Participates in a Landmark Publication on Omega-7

Coshocton, OH – February 26, 2018. AlaskOmega announces the publication of the first comprehensive review of the effects of palmitoleic acid by Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. Palmitoleic acid, an omega-7 fatty acid, has been proposed as a plausible alternative to prevent, control, or ameliorate chronic metabolic and inflammatory disorders.

Palmitoleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid that can be synthesized in humans and obtained directly from macadamia nut, sea buckthorn, and some fish oils. It circulates in the blood along with other fatty acids and is a component of cell membranes. The recently published review is a significant advancement in the field of dietary fatty acid research, as it summarizes the immune and metabolic effects of palmitoleic acid from over 40 studies.

“While the human data are inconsistent and clinical work is needed, the research in cell culture and animals shows many positive effects of palmitoleic acid”, remarked Gretchen Vannice, MS, RDN, Head of Global Nutrition Education at AlaskOmega and co-author of the review, together with Camila Souza, PhD and Philip Calder, PhD, University of São Paulo and University of Southampton, respectively. “This little known fatty acid is intriguing,” continued Vannice, “having been shown to improve insulin function and reduce inflammation and fatty liver in animals. We are excited to contribute to the body of research on palmitoleic acid.”

“There is actually quite a lot of literature on palmitoleic acid” added Philip Calder, a world-renowned expert in fatty acid research, “but strong human evidence for its benefits is currently lacking. However, given its potential roles in health I think that more human research should be done.”

Publication: Souza, C.O., Vannice, G.K., Rosa Neto, J.C., & Calder, P.C.; Is palmitoleic acid a plausible non-pharmacological strategy to prevent or control chronic metabolic and inflammatory disorders? Molecular Nutrition & Food Research; January, 2018 (online).
