AlaskOmega Participates in a Landmark Publication on Omega-7

Coshocton, OH – February 26, 2018. AlaskOmega announces the publication of the first comprehensive review of the effects of palmitoleic acid by Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. Palmitoleic acid, an omega-7 fatty acid, has been proposed as a plausible alternative to prevent, control, or ameliorate chronic metabolic and inflammatory disorders.

Palmitoleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid that can be synthesized in humans and obtained directly from macadamia nut, sea buckthorn, and some fish oils. It circulates in the blood along with other fatty acids and is a component of cell membranes. The recently published review is a significant advancement in the field of dietary fatty acid research, as it summarizes the immune and metabolic effects of palmitoleic acid from over 40 studies.

“While the human data are inconsistent and clinical work is needed, the research in cell culture and animals shows many positive effects of palmitoleic acid”, remarked Gretchen Vannice, MS, RDN, Head of Global Nutrition Education at AlaskOmega and co-author of the review, together with Camila Souza, PhD and Philip Calder, PhD, University of São Paulo and University of Southampton, respectively. “This little known fatty acid is intriguing,” continued Vannice, “having been shown to improve insulin function and reduce inflammation and fatty liver in animals. We are excited to contribute to the body of research on palmitoleic acid.”

“There is actually quite a lot of literature on palmitoleic acid” added Philip Calder, a world-renowned expert in fatty acid research, “but strong human evidence for its benefits is currently lacking. However, given its potential roles in health I think that more human research should be done.”

Publication: Souza, C.O., Vannice, G.K., Rosa Neto, J.C., & Calder, P.C.; Is palmitoleic acid a plausible non-pharmacological strategy to prevent or control chronic metabolic and inflammatory disorders? Molecular Nutrition & Food Research; January, 2018 (online).

Study Indicates DHA Fish Oil Concentrate May Boost Immune System in Humans

Coshocton, OH – February 02, 2018. Organic Technologies, producer of AlaskOmega® omega-3 and omega-7 concentrates, announces new research demonstrating that a high DHA fish oil concentrate can support healthy immune response in middle-aged obese adults. Recently published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, a human pilot study tested the effects of concentrated eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3s from fish oil on B cell responses. B cells are a type of white blood cells that stimulate antibody production but also play a role in cytokine secretion and antigen presentation to T cells.

“Animal studies consistently show that omega-3s robustly improve various aspects of immunity, including inflammation”, stated Raz Shaikh, PhD, lead investigator of the study and currently Associate Professor of Nutrition at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “To-date, B cell activation has not been well studied in humans with omega-3s and underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We were very excited to observe the immune enhancing properties of high DHA fish oil on B cells in humans”, concluded Shaikh.

This study sheds light on how omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may function in the human immune system, which is particularly relevant for those with inflammatory and chronic disease conditions. This study suggests that DHA uniquely contributes to certain aspects of immune function.

“This study adds to the body of knowledge that supplementation with a high DHA fish oil concentrate can help support healthy immune systems in select populations”, said Steve Dillingham, global director for Organic Technologies’ AlaskOmega® Ingredients, the major sponsor of the study. “While this pilot study results are certainly encouraging, much more research in this area is warranted”.

AlaskOmega Launches New DHA Omega-3 Concentrates
New DHA (TG) concentrates fulfill demand for 100% sustainable DHA formulations.

COSHOCTON, OH – Sept 13, 2017 – Organic Technologies, producer of MSC-certified AlaskOmega® natural fish oils, omega-3 and omega-7 concentrates, announced today that it has added two new DHA omega-3 concentrates to its line, a high DHA concentrate and a medium strength DHA (non-tuna) tuna oil alternative. AlaskOmega’s high DHA concentrate offers a min. 460 mg/g DHA, 100mg/g EPA in triglyceride (TG) form (TG100460). The tuna oil alternative is made from wild Alaska Pollock and provides the same EPA/DHA content typically found in tuna oil (min. 50 mg/g EPA, 250 mg/g DHA in TG form).

Both DHA oils are MSC-certified and well suited for formulators looking for a fully sustainable DHA oil source that is extremely low in oxidation (TOTOX max of 5), and offers excellent sensory characteristics. To assure AlaskOmega® oils have optimal taste and smell, AlaskOmega analyzes the sensory of all its TG oils through a certified in-house organoleptic panel. “We see the demand for MSC-certified 100% sustainable DHA concentrates increasing as companies continue to move away from non-sustainable tuna-oil based products due to a potential concern about overfishing and bycatch, and the overall sustainability profile for tuna-based oils”, remarked Dan Wiley, VP Nutrition and Health at Organic Technologies, manufacturer of AlaskOmega® natural fish oils and omega-3/omega-7 concentrates. “AlaskOmega® DHA oils are well suited for supplements targeting prenatal and childhood development, brain/cognitive health, eye and immunity health” continued Wiley, “ offering an excellent sustainability and oil sensory profile”.

The AlaskOmega team will be promoting their new DHA concentrates at the upcoming Supply Side West event held in Las Vegas during September 25-29 (booth #LL158),
together with their whole line of MSC-certified AlaskOmega® omega-3 and omega-7 concentrates.

Organic Technologies Presents Omega-7 Research Overview at ISSFAL

By | Press Releases | No Comments

COSHOCTON, OH – September 14, 2016 – Organic Technologies, producer of AlaskOmega® omega-3 fish oil and omega-7 concentrates, presented an investigative review of omega-7 (C16:1 palmitoleic acid) at the 12th Congress of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) held last week in South Africa. ISSFAL, established in 1991 with the objective of increasing the understanding of dietary fatty acids and lipids in health and disease through research and education, boasts over 500 members from more than forty countries and includes scientists, health professionals, and educators.

Gretchen Vannice, MS, a registered dietitian nutritionist with an extensive background in dietary lipids, co-chaired and opened the ISSFAL omega-7 session, reviewing a wide range of research conducted over the past 15 years on the potential health benefits of palmitoleic acid, including heart health, insulin sensitivity, and reducing inflammation. “Little is known about the role of cis palmitoleic acid (POA) in human health. It is a unique monounsaturated fat,” remarked Gretchen Vannice, Head of Global Nutrition Education at Organic Technologies. “Animal studies consistently report promising effects on markers of diabetes and inflammation and one short-term supplement trial suggests beneficial effects on blood lipids, but how these findings translate into human health benefit is unclear ” continued Vannice. “Certainly, more human and mechanistic research is needed and it’s great to see Organic Technologies take the lead on this”.

Organic Technologies is actively conducting clinical studies with leading researchers worldwide to document effects of its AlaskOmega® Omega-7 Palmitoleic 500, a highly concentrated form (min. 50% omega-7), allowing food, supplement, and cosmetic formulators to achieve higher, purified omega-7 levels at a more competitive price.

AlaskOmega will be showcasing its omega-7 ingredient at SupplySide West 2016 to be held Oct 4-8 in Las Vegas (Booth #HH158).

Largest US fishery proves it’s sustainable, again

By | Press Releases | No Comments

fishery re-certified 2016The largest fishery in the U.S. and the largest certified sustainable fishery in the world, Alaska Pollock, has again achieved re-certification to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard. This science-based standard is the world’s most credible and recognized standard for environmentally sustainable wild-caught seafood. The Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska Pollock fisheries have been certified to this standard since 2005.

Alaska Pollock is among the top five most consumed fish per capita in the U.S. Its mild flavor and flaky texture make it popular for consumers around the world. Primary markets for Alaska Pollock products are the U.S., Europe (where it is Germany’s most consumed fish) and Japan. The U.S. and Europe are the main markets for fillet-type products, which are used for fish and chips, fish tacos, fish sandwiches and fish sticks. Japan is the principal market for Alaska pollock surimi, which is used as the primary ingredient in a wide range of surimi seafood products (kamaboko).
