AlaskOmega Participates in a Landmark Publication on Omega-7

Coshocton, OH – February 26, 2018. AlaskOmega announces the publication of the first comprehensive review of the effects of palmitoleic acid by Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. Palmitoleic acid, an omega-7 fatty acid, has been proposed as a plausible alternative to prevent, control, or ameliorate chronic metabolic and inflammatory disorders.

Palmitoleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid that can be synthesized in humans and obtained directly from macadamia nut, sea buckthorn, and some fish oils. It circulates in the blood along with other fatty acids and is a component of cell membranes. The recently published review is a significant advancement in the field of dietary fatty acid research, as it summarizes the immune and metabolic effects of palmitoleic acid from over 40 studies.

“While the human data are inconsistent and clinical work is needed, the research in cell culture and animals shows many positive effects of palmitoleic acid”, remarked Gretchen Vannice, MS, RDN, Head of Global Nutrition Education at AlaskOmega and co-author of the review, together with Camila Souza, PhD and Philip Calder, PhD, University of São Paulo and University of Southampton, respectively. “This little known fatty acid is intriguing,” continued Vannice, “having been shown to improve insulin function and reduce inflammation and fatty liver in animals. We are excited to contribute to the body of research on palmitoleic acid.”

“There is actually quite a lot of literature on palmitoleic acid” added Philip Calder, a world-renowned expert in fatty acid research, “but strong human evidence for its benefits is currently lacking. However, given its potential roles in health I think that more human research should be done.”

Study Indicates DHA Fish Oil Concentrate May Boost Immune System in Humans

Coshocton, OH – February 02, 2018. Organic Technologies, producer of AlaskOmega® omega-3 and omega-7 concentrates, announces new research demonstrating that a high DHA fish oil concentrate can support healthy immune response in middle-aged obese adults. Recently published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, a human pilot study tested the effects of concentrated eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3s from fish oil on B cell responses. B cells are a type of white blood cells that stimulate antibody production but also play a role in cytokine secretion and antigen presentation to T cells.

“Animal studies consistently show that omega-3s robustly improve various aspects of immunity, including inflammation”, stated Raz Shaikh, PhD, lead investigator of the study and currently Associate Professor of Nutrition at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “To-date, B cell activation has not been well studied in humans with omega-3s and underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We were very excited to observe the immune enhancing properties of high DHA fish oil on B cells in humans”, concluded Shaikh.

This study sheds light on how omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may function in the human immune system, which is particularly relevant for those with inflammatory and chronic disease conditions. This study suggests that DHA uniquely contributes to certain aspects of immune function.
