AlaskOmega® Omega-7: Science Backed. Beauty Approved.

Consumers are increasingly looking for visible skin benefits from within — and brands are under pressure to deliver ingredients backed by real clinical science, not just trends.

A recent human clinical study on AlaskOmega® omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) adds meaningful evidence to the growing “beauty from within” category, showing measurable improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle appearance after supplementation.

Here’s what brands and formulators should know.

What is Omega-7?

Omega-7 (cis-palmitoleic acid) is a monounsaturated fatty acid naturally found in certain fish, macadamia nuts, and sea buckthorn. Unlike omega-3s, which are considered essential fats, omega-7 is also produced in the body and functions as a bioactive lipid involved in skin and metabolic processes.

While omega-7 has been studied for metabolic and mucosal health, interest is rapidly expanding in its role in skin structure and moisture balance.

Inside the Clinical Study

A 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial (PMID: 38257104) evaluated the effects of daily AlaskOmega omega-7 supplementation on skin health in middle-aged women. Participants consumed 1,000 mg per day of an omega-7 concentrate (50% palmitoleic acid), and the study reported no supplement-related adverse effects, supporting safety and tolerability.

Researchers assessed multiple objective skin parameters over the course of the study.

Key Clinical Findings

1. Improved Skin Hydration: Participants taking omega-7 experienced increased skin moisture levels along with reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — a key indicator of skin barrier function. Better moisture retention supports smoother-looking, more resilient skin.

2. Enhanced Skin Elasticity: Measurements showed significant improvements in skin elasticity, suggesting omega-7 may help support the skin’s structural integrity and a firmer appearance over time.

3. Reduction in Wrinkle Appearance: The omega-7 group demonstrated statistically significant improvements in wrinkle-related skin parameters compared to placebo, indicating visible benefits in signs of skin aging.

Together, these outcomes point to omega-7 as a promising ingestible ingredient for supporting skin hydration, firmness, and visible aging markers from within.

Why This Matters for Beauty from Within Formulations

Consumers are moving beyond topical-only routines and seeking science-backed ingestible solutions that complement skincare. Clinical data like this helps brands:

  • Substantiate hydration and elasticity support claims
  • Align with demand for non-invasive, natural beauty solutions
  • Differentiate in a crowded ingestible beauty market with measurable outcomes

AlaskOmega Omega-7’s lipid nature and role in skin moisture balance make it especially relevant for products positioned around dryness, loss of firmness, and visible aging.

The AlaskOmega® Difference

Not all omega-7 sources are the same. AlaskOmega® omega-7 concentrates are:

  • Sourced from wild Alaska Pollock
  • MSC-certified sustainable and traceable
  • Highly concentrated, allowing meaningful dosing in finished formulations
  • Clinically validated

For formulators, this means access to a marine-based, clean-label omega-7 ingredient aligned with both performance and sustainability expectations.

The Future of Ingestible Skin Health

As the beauty-from-within category grows, ingredients supported by human clinical research will lead the way. Omega-7 is emerging as one of the few lipids with data spanning hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle appearance — three of the most sought-after skin benefits globally.

For brands developing next-generation skin health supplements, omega-7 represents an opportunity to pair consumer-friendly positioning with science-driven credibility.
